Dr. Kuiper will be completing his Surgery residency program at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines at the end of June and beginning his practice at Surgical Associates on July 6th.
Dr. Kuiper is a native Iowan who grew up in Sheldon and received all of his degrees in Iowa, including his medical degree from Des Moines University. When asked specifically about coming to Grinnell, Kuiper replied “I’m very excited about the opportunity to practice in small town Iowa, and particularly in Grinnell because of its unique diversity and vibrant community. Surgical Associates is well organized and stays on the cutting edge, factors that influenced my decision to join them.”

Coster stated, “We could not be more delighted about Dr. Kuiper’s decision to join us here in Grinnell. It took over a year of extensive searching to find the right surgeon to match not only the exceptional skill and training requirements this practice demands, but also the necessary demeanor, confidence, and communication skills. Dr. Kuiper is the sort of surgeon who can lead the medical center into the exciting future of surgery as new technology develops.” Todd Linden, CEO of Grinnell Regional Medical Center, agreed: “Dr. Kuiper brings with him the full package, including outstanding training and clinical skills, a caring and engaging personality, and enthusiasm for practicing in a rural community.” Susan Witt, GRMC Board Chairman, commented: “The Board was pleased to work with Surgical Associates to recruit Dr. Kuiper. Recruiting outstanding physicians to rural communities takes a team effort. We are excited that Dr. Kuiper will be joining the GRMC surgical team.”
As a General Surgeon, Dr. Kuiper will provide expert surgical care for a wide variety of problems. He has extensive training and experience in minimally invasive surgery including laparoscopic colon and hernia surgery, and has a special interest in surgery of the breast. Kuiper’s training included work with the surgeons at the Katzmann Breast Center in Des Moines where he learned the most advanced techniques for office-based minimally invasive breast procedures as well as the most advanced operating room procedures for the treatment of benign and malignant breast disease.
Future plans for Surgical Associates include the expansion of modalities for the treatment of breast diseases as well as the application of robotics for General Surgery and Urology and the addition of other surgeons, according to Coster. “Surgical Associates has a reputation for creativity and quality and already has a large following throughout the state for minimally invasive surgery and obesity surgery. Dr. Kuiper’s skill set and youthful energy will allow us to not only continue in those areas where we have set the standard for excellence, but expand into new areas as well.”
Dr. Kuiper’s outside interests include golf , traveling, and physical fitness. Appointments can be made now at 236-4323 for his arrival in July.
