Coster, M.D., F.A.C.S. joined Dr. Bower and
Dr. Wilson as the third surgeon in 1991 after completing
his residency at Iowa Methodist Medical Center. He was
instrumental in the development of new applications for
laparoscopy. With Dr. Coster's vision, the Grinnell General
Hospital changed from a primary care hospital to a state-of-the-art
regional medical center that now includes a formal trauma
program, expanded intensive care capabilities, and added
surgical services in vascular and thoracic surgery. Surgical
Associates became known both regionally and nationally
for its work in the application of laparoscopy to general
surgical problems.

Russell
Bandstra, M.D. joined the group in the mid-90's.
As a University of Iowa trained urologist, Dr. Bandstra
was the first surgical sub-specialist to join the group.
His expertise in both surgical and general urology added
a new dimension to the practice. His skill in the treatment
of disorders of the kidney, ureters, bladder, and prostate
markedly enhanced the spectrum of care offered to the
patients of Surgical Associates.

Stephen
M. Sundberg, M.D. joined Surgical Associates
in May 2006 as a general surgeon. Sundberg moved his practice
to Grinnell from Boone, Iowa where he practiced for 25
years. Sundberg is a general surgeon experienced in a
remarkably broad range of procedures. The Hennepin Community
Medical Center where Dr. Sundberg trained is known for
turning out talented, widely educated surgeons. He provides
expert care for trauma, gynecologic, vascular, and all
abdominal surgeries.

Nicholas Kuiper, D.O. joined Surgical Associates in July, 2010. Dr. Kuiper completed his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.) residency in General Surgery at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. He received special training in breast surgery at the Katzmann Breast Center in Des Moines. The focus of this training is on treatment of breast cancer using sentinel node mapping and attention to conservation of the breast. Dr. Kuiper practices the full range of general surgery: laparascopic, open, and robot-assisted. Dr. Kuiper was born and raised in Sheldon, Iowa.

Aaron Smith, D.O. joined Surgical Associates in July 2010. Dr. Smith completed his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.) in Urology at Michigan State- College of Osteopathic Medicine in Detroit. Dr. Smith practices the full range of urological medicine and surgery, including robotic radical prostotectomy. Dr. Smith sees patients in Grinnell, Pella, and Newton. Robotics are preformed at Pella Regional Medical Center. Dr. Smith was raised in Pella, Iowa.

Stefanie
H. Noun, P.A./C joined Surgical Associates
in April of 2006. Noun coordinates the bariatric medicine
program for Surgical Associates and Grinnell Regional
Medical Center. She coordinates the pre-operative,
post-operative, support-group, and nutritional programs.
Noun comes to Surgical Associates, LLP with extensive
experience in medicine and psychiatric care. She has a
strong interest in patient education and works
side by side with the surgeons in the office.

Jarrod D. Phelps, PA-C joined Surgical Associates in July of 2008 after completing his Master's of Science/Physician Assistant Studies degree at Des Moines University. Prior to that Jarrod attended Loras College, completed his BS degree while Majoring in Biology and obtaining a minor in Chemistry. Jarrod's duties at Surgical Associates include: 1st assisting each of the surgeons during surgery, performing minor procedures, seeing consults in the hospital and ER, and assisting with inpatient care during a patient's hospital stay. Jarrod is skilled in performing Thoracentesis/Paracentesis, Intraoperative EGD, and placing Picc-Lines, Central Venous Catheters, & Chest Tubes. Jarrod is married to Kristin Phelps who is also a Physician Assistant at Grinnell Regional Family Practice and they have one son, Easton. They are both happy to be close to home, as they grew up in Victor/Montezuma and Sioux City respectively. Jarrod's interests include football, baseball, hockey, golf, music, fishing, woodworking, and being outdoors.
