What is Urology?
Urology is a surgical/medical specialty that includes the surgical and medical treatment of diseases of
- the kidneys
- adrenal glands
- seminal vesicles
- urinary tract
Urology includes the entire urinary tract and reproductive system of the male and the entire urinary system of the female, exclusive of the reproductive organs.
The training of the Urologist may include a year or two of General Surgery residency followed by three or more years of specialty residency in Urology, or it may be a pure five-year residency program in Urology immediately after medical school completion.
The fully trained Urologist treats the full spectrum of diseases of the urinary tract in both sexes as well as the reproductive tract in men. Examples would include the surgical and medical management of
- male infertility
- Peyronie's disease
- prostate cancer and enlarged prostate
- benign and malignant diseases of the bladder
- infectious diseases of the bladder and kidneys
- kidney and bladder stones
- kidney cancer
- adrenal gland tumors
- ureteral reflux
- urinary incontinence
- trauma to the urinary system or male reproductive system
